So many people think that it is only important to wear sunscreen during the summer months when the sun is the strongest, but did you know that it is just as important to wear your sunscreen during the winter months too? Estheticians want to make sure you have healthy skin year round and maybe you’ll even become a sunscreen junkie, like myself!
Many of us grew up in the baby oil and tanning bed era that has now created the sun spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer that has ravaged generations. I was “sun-smart” long before ever becoming an esthetician and I thank my lucky stars for it today. But even if today is the first time you’re hearing the need for sunscreen in the winter months, there is still hope in protecting your body’s largest organ!

Many practitioners, myself included, are extremely knowledgeable and offer treatments and products that help diminish the signs of sun damage. But if we’re being honest, it’s so much easier to prevent damage than it will ever be to reverse it. I have a few suggestions on how to start the new year off on a skin-loving note!
I hear clients all the time saying how can I stay sun-safe and still have a glow?
Other than staying out of direct sun exposure (with a hat and sunglasses), I’m a big fan of a good tinted moisturizer. I lean towards multi-tasking products and love getting the triple advantage of moisture, light coverage, and sun protection.
Not wanting to commit to color? No worries. Options ranging from gel, cream, spray, and balm are available.
Another sun-safe tip: Don’t forget about those smoochers!
While you may use a lip balm or oil to protect your lips from winter dryness and peeling, it‘s important to protect them from UV rays too. Make sure that the lip product you choose has at least an spf 15.
Not sure what to pick for yourself? Schedule a consultation with your esthetician to correctly diagnose your skin type and any skin condition(s) you’d like to address. In your consultation, your esthetician will do a full skin analysis, assess lifestyle and environmental factors, then guide you towards the correct sun care product for your individual needs and preferences.
Let’s enjoy 2022 from the inside, out! And that means wearing your sunscreen starting TODAY!
