It Starts with a Square

You Are My Destiny

BY Chelsey Handley

Hello there! Let me introduce myself. I’m Destiny, a two-year-old, female Labrador Retriever mix. Before I came to the shelter, I lived in a backyard with two other dogs and three puppies. One day, some humans drove up in a truck. We heard them say they received a call from someone because we were living in a backyard in dirt with no toys, no fresh water, and no food. Our human said he was having trouble providing for us and couldn’t take care of us anymore. So, the truck people used treats to coax us into their van, made us comfortable with warm fuzzies, and took us to where I live now, The Collierville Animal Shelter.

When I was led out of the truck into a kennel, everything was scary and so strange! I watched the other dogs to see what to do. I quickly fell into a routine and began to pick up so many new tricks. At first, when the humans would touch me, I didn’t know how to react. I learned that what they were doing was called ‘petting,’ and it was relaxing, soft, and wonderful! I love it now. I’ve also learned new things like how to walk on a leash, how to sit, how to play… and I’ve learned what ‘love’ is! I have learned so much about the relationship that can develop between a dog and humans. It’s very special.

So here’s the deal – it’s great here at the shelter, but it’s not the same as a forever family. Sometimes at night I dream about my forever home and the day I would leave with them to give some other dog the opportunity to use my kennel to rest, relax, and learn everything I’ve learned. The humans here say I should tell you that I would fit best in a home with humans that will give me praise, positive reinforcement, and lots of love. They told me I would bring so much fun, love, and companionship to an active forever family that enjoyed long walks and doing things like playing ball with me. I’m eager to please and very treat-oriented, so I‘m easy to teach. I would love to keep working with a family that would enjoy teaching me things like ‘down’ and ‘come.’ I learned my ‘sit’ command in just one day!

Do you think you could be my forever family? I truly hope so! If you fill out an application, we can meet up at the shelter. Let’s discover if I’m your Destiny!

Xoxo, Destiny
